Palma is the major city and port of the island of Mallorca,
the largest island in Spain. It is also the capital of the Balearic Islands
archipelago. Most of the island’s yacht chandlery and repair/ refit centers of
Mallorca are located here. Palma is located
on the southwest coast of the island at the northwestern end of the Bay of
Palma. The port has plenty of dockage, and there are also other docking areas
around the island in its natural bays, with quiet secluded beaches. Palma has a
very large Gothic cathedral on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean. The best
place to view Palma is looking up from the waterfront, with the cathedral and
Almudaina Palace soaring proudly above the defensive walls of the old city.
Historically, Palma has been the yachting hub of the Balearic
Islands, as well as one of the major stops on any Mediterranean tour. The city
of Palma has jurisdiction over the sub-archipelago Cabrera. This includes the
islands of Cabreara, Conejera, Estells, Imperial, Rodon, Foradada, Plana, and
Pobra.
Palma is one of the world’s oldest cities; it was originally
settled in the Bronze Age. You can easily see the different influences of
various cultures who have settled in Palma throughout the ages. The city was
not discovered by the tourism industry until the 1950s, but it has been a
thriving travel destination since then.
There is a large airport in the heart of Palma with daily
flights from other European countries.
You can also take a train from one of the other Mallorcan towns, we recommend
starting a train tour from Soller where the mountain scenery is breathtaking! There
are no bridges to other islands so you can only travel by car on the Island. There are berths for vessels of all
sizes from small yachts to cruise ships. There are also ferry services between
Mallorca and other Balearic Islands.
There are many reputable hotels in Palma. The Hotel
Dalt Murada, is
a delightful 16th century hotel with period furnishings,
hydromassage baths, internet access, and satellite TV. Palacio Ca Sa Galesa, is a luxury hotel that goes all out with furnishings:
silk curtains, antique furniture, and original paintings are in every room. The
facilities are also top rate: private phone line, internet access, and climate
control. Portixol Hotel is a small 4 star hotel facing the sea and the Portixol
harbor. Its unique décor mixes Mediterranean and Scandinavian influences.
