The US Virgin Islands are a group of islands in the Caribbean that are the only United States territory in the Caribbean. The islands are geographically part of the Virgin Islands archipelago and are located in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles. The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of the main islands of St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas The islands begin at the top of the Caribbean, only 80 miles east of Puerto Rico.
Each US Virgin Island is unique. St. Croix has a complex eco system that transitions from a flourishing rainforest on the west side of the island to a desert on the east side. St. John and St. Croix both have national parks where visitors can venture off to self guided underwater tours.
St. John is most well known for its enormous national park. The 5,000 acres were donated in 1956 by Laurence Rockefeller. His influence has kept the intricacies of the island sacred and unspoiled by overdevelopment. Aside from the city of Cruz Bay the island of St. John has avoided becoming commercial in comparison to the other US Virgin Ilands making this a great destination for a private Caribbean Yacht Charter.
There are beaches and convenient anchorages on both the north and south sides of the island. Trunk Bay is one of the most photographed beaches in the USVI, located on the North Shore of St. John. Leinester Bay is a popular night anchorage with some excellent swimming and snorkeling spots. In addition to the upscale marinas and private airports, commercial airfares to St. Thomas are quite reasonable as well. This has made this island the perfect origin for a US Virgin Islands Yacht Charter or a BVI Yacht Charter. Ferry services provided by the island make if convenient to travel to Tortola and back make it possible for charterers to shop and fly back out of the USVI at the duration of the yacht charter. Traveling to the USVI offers a quick Caribbean escape to charterers who don’t wish to go to far away from familiar territory. The principle language in the islands is English, with some Spanish and Creole. |
