St. Maarten is located in the northeast Caribbean, approximately 300 km southeast of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The island is divided in half between France and the Netherlands and it is noted as the smallest inhabited sea island divided by two nations.

St. Maarten directly refers to the southern Dutch half of the island which is considered part of the Netherlands Antilles. This side of the island is the most commonly visited for a St. Maarten Yacht Charter because of its vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches, jewelery, casinos and a generous bar to guest ratio. The region is also notorious for serving quixotic rum based concoctions from guavaberry liquors. Travelers also get the best of both worlds by being able to enjoy both gourmet French and Indian Cuisine.

Despite the short runway, arrival to the island has been made quite simple with two full service airports, Princess Juliana International Airport and Grand Case Airport. Because the island is located along the intertropical convergence zone where it is directly affected by strong hurricane seasons, seasonal chartering is a must. Shopping on St Maarten and Saint Martin offers high quality duty-free goods in numerous boutiques. The island has a well-earned reputation as a "shopper's paradise". Popular goods include local crafts & arts, exotic foods, jewelry, liquor, tobacco, leather goods, as well as most designer goods. Because of Duty free Tax free abound the island has become more of a shopping and relaxing destination. Most often the designer goods are offered at significant discounts, often up to 40% lower than US retail prices.

Popular neighboring islands in the region incliude St. Bart’s, Antigua, St. Vincent, Saba, Saint Kitts and Nevis. The majority of these islands are within a visible vicinity from St. Maarten.
