The Cayman Islands are a British overseas territory located in the western Caribbean Sea just south of Cuba and west of Jamaica. The country is comprised of the Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman Islands. All three islands were formed by large coral heads covering submerged ice age peaks of western extensions of the Cuban Sierra Maestra range and are mostly flat. The country was initially named “Las Tortugas” by Christopher Colombus after the numerous sea turtles who inhabited the island.
This country is one of the few locations in the Caribbean that can accommodate both serious business and pleasure. In addition to being recognized as a leading offshore financial center and name renowned location for yacht and ship registration, the Cayman Islands have been regarded as one of the globe’s premier Snorkeling and Scuba Diving destinations because of the crystal clear warm waters and shallow reefs. Yachts up to 150 feet may dock in George Town or may anchor just off shore. Grand Cayman also has an International Airport which also offers connecting flights to sister islands. You may either stay aboard or go ashore via tender on your Cayman Islands Yacht Charter and stay at five star resorts such as the Ritz-Carlton or Hyatt Hotels which are just steps away from the Seven Mile Beach. If you choose to island hop through the Caymans you will find many exotic species such as the Cayman Brac Parrot, Blue Iguana and Redfooted Booby population. Other Grand Cayman tourist attractions include the ironshore landscape of Hell, the 24- acre marine theme park Boatswain's Beach, also home of the Cayman Turtle Farm and the Mastic Trail, a hiking trail through the forests in the centre of the island. On Cayman Brac, a lighthouse and a few local museums are tourist draws.
Art and Culture are other features of the Cayman Islands that attract international attention. The National Museum and National Gallery preserve contemporary and dated art works of local and international talent. A Cultural History Exhibition is displayed within the museum, and teaches patrons about historical customs and traditions native to the Cayman Islands. The Gallery sponsors eight exhibitions every year and is located in the Harbour Place in George Town. While the Cayman Islands are vibrant and exciting, the nightlife typically ends around midnight. Sunday’s are highly regarded as peaceful days for family and relaxation. If you are the discerning yachtsman who is looking to take a quiet Caribbean Yacht Charter vacation filled with outdoor activities than the Cayman Islands are ideal. Keep in mind that because of the region’s storm season, the optimum months to book a yacht charter to the Cayman’s is December through May. |
