British Columbia is definitely one of the world’s
most exciting yacht charter destinations. This area is perfect for the
nature enthusiast. There are a variety of different tours for travelers
to experience the beautiful landscape and diverse wildlife of the area:
kayaking tours, whale watching, dolphin watching, nature trails, bear
watching, bird watching, fishing, and so much more. Not only can you
explore the coast, there are other popular charter locations very close
by. Washington’s San Juan Islands are just to the south, while Alaska Yacht Charters are further north.
Although its name may be misleading, Desolation
Sound is a very well known yacht charter destination, and it
illustrates the diversity British Columbia is known for. Locations you
may see on a Desolation Sound yacht charter are Mystery Reef, Savoy
Island, Cortes Island, the amazing 90’ waterfalls of Cassel Lake,
Tenedos Bay, Redonda Islands, or any number of hundreds of other areas.
Discovery Island is famous for Chinook salmon fishing.
Princess Louisa Inlet is definitely an unforgettable
charter experience, many traveler’s have stated that it is their
favorite areas of British Columbia. On your way there, be sure to stop
by Kipling Cove and see the waterfall that tumbles 1400 feet down a
sheer mountainside! When navigating the Malibu Rapids, be sure to
travel in only “slack water” because the currents run 9 knots and the
channel is narrow and rocky. This is a thrilling journey but some find
it tedious and nerve-wracking. This is the tidal entrance to the inlet
so it can’t really be avoided, but trust us when we say it’s worth the
trouble. When you enter the inlet, you can dock for free behind
MacDonald Island for up to 72 hours.
The British Columbia Gulf Islands are virtually
innumerable. When you see a map of the area, it looks like the roots
from a huge tree have grown into the coast cutting out passageways and
creating islands. The Gulf Islands and Victoria offer something for
everyone, from the more crowded cities, to small culturally rich
villages, to deserted islands with abundant wildlife and untouched
splendor. Seeing the cherry blossoms bloom in the springtime as leafy
greens emerge is incredible. To see some of the gorgeous perennials in
bloom, visit the Buchart Gardens in Victoria. Wallace Island and
Jedediah Island usted to be large homesteads but they are now preserved
as marine parks and are a favorite anchorage for overnighters.
British Columbia has plenty of opportunities for the
travelers among us who like to get up and go while on vacation, but it
still caters to those that prefer to relax on the yacht. Kayaking is
one of the best activities during a British Columbia yacht charter, and
wow is it a workout! Kayakers are able to reach many areas that large
ships cannot, like intertidal zones, kelp beds, shoal waters, and small
beaches.
Whale watching is an important part of any ecotour.
The salmon migration draws the whales in with the promise of rich fatty
fish. The migration is something spectacular In and of itself. These
fish migrate thousands of miles each year over small falls, up strong
rapids against the current, and against al odds to procreate and then
die shortly after. The best whale sighting locations are naturally
along the salmon’s migratory route like Robson Bight and the Broughton
Archipelago. On any day of cruising, you may see Orca whales
ecolocating, foraging, blowing, breeching, tail bobbing, or diving
around your boat playfully. Pacific white-sided dolphins strive to
entertain with aerial acrobatics, surfing bow waves, or trying to get
your attention from alongside your yacht.
Bear sightings are also thrilling! You get to marvel
at these magnificent creatures on land, playing, swimming, or fishing
for salmon for the safety of your yacht. The salmon attracts whales
offshore, but you can also see the bears, eagles, wolves, otter, seal,
and other carnivores fishing off the mainland. River estuaries are the
best for bear watching, often at the head of jade-tinted fiords, amid
snowcapped peaks and cascading waterfalls. June and September are the
most prevalent bear sightings. Great Bear Rainforest is the largest
tract of intact temperate rainforest in the world, and it is home to a
plethora of different species of wildlife. This area is most popular
for its many species of bear for ecotourists to enjoy.
The Pacific Northwest is one of the most incredible
areas of the world, and British Columbia is a shining example of the
region’s beauty and charm. From its towering mountain peaks up to 7,000
feet; to huge winding waterfalls, fjords, natural streams, lakes, and
pools; to dense foliage and nature trails; to wildlife like sea lions,
dolphins, porpoises, Orcas, Grey whales, deer, bald eagles, mountain
goats, bears, and others, it is clear that British Columbia has what is
takes to amaze even the most seasoned of travelers. The bays, coves,
islands, sounds, passageways, etc that you can visit are truly
limitless, some say it is very difficult to find the same cove twice.
The summer temperatures and tides here are quite comfortable and there
is plenty of warm water for swimming and sunshine for lying out, hiking
and camping. The warm water also supports the freshest oysters! The
weather is warmest during the months of May through September, which is
also the charter season. Some travelers compare the climate to the
Mediterranean with a dry tolerable summer in the 70s. Also, keep in
mind that the daylight hours are much longer here, giving you longer
days for exploration.
