There are many small and secluded island countries in the Atlantic. Because many of these islands have few or no nearby neighboring islands, an Atlantic Island yacht charter is typically focused more on out to sea itineraries as opposed to activities on the mainland. This is especially attractive to those that crave privacy and open ocean, and are more than satisfied with the array of water sport activities that their yacht can accommodate.
The most popular Atlantic Island yachting destination is the Bahamas, located just west of Florida and northwest of the Cuba, these islands share much of the same traits as the Caribbean. They share the same crystal blue waters, flat terrain, tropical climate, and the winter heating blanket we call the Gulf Stream. They are very extensive and close to other islands so island hopping is made easy.
Another very popular destination is the islands of Bermuda. This chain is located 640 miles off the coast of the United States. The land area is only 20 square miles but it is jam packed with incredible unique natural features. One very stunning feature of Bermuda is its pink sand beaches.
There is plenty of shallow water, typically 30-40 feet, with wrecks and coral reefs for divers to explore. Bermuda’s water is crystal clear and the visibility is amazing. There is amazing diving at Church Bay, the reefs are readily accessible from shore. For a very unique diving experience, visit Bermuda’s Underwater Exploration Institute where you can marvel at Bermudas crystal caves, stalactites and underground saltwater pools.
Bermuda offers plenty of interesting stops on the mainland as well such as the Royal Navy Dockyard, the aquarium and zoo, the Botanical gardens, and the many lighthouses. It is important to note that you cannot rent a car on the island. The most popular for of transportation among tourists are rental scooters.
Other islands in the Atlantic include the Azores, Bouvet Island, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde Islands, Falkland Islands, Faroe Islands, Madeira, Iceland, Greenland, Svalbard (aka Spitsbergen), South Georgia, and South Orkney Islands.
